Bringing the Unexplained and Unusual to you
Scarey South West provides professional, educational, and inspiring talks and lectures to Devon and Cornwall on the paranormal and the ancient. We bring the unexplained and the unusual to you! Our talks and lectures take place during evenings in July and November and at our Annual ‘Spooky’ Conference in March. We are as unique as the events that we provide – so why not spend some time with us and learn about something different.
Scarey South West is a Not-for-Profit Organisation (NFPO). We are raising funds for dog rescue and welfare via our annual conference and evening talks. We at S.S.W. believe all dogs, no matter where they are living in the world, deserve to be treated with kindness, respect and compassion.
During 2023 and 2024, Scarey South West will raise funds for the incredible U.K. charity War Paws. Their amazing work to help alleviate the pain and suffering of dogs in hostile environments, war zones, and areas of civil conflict in countries such as Iraq, Ukraine and Syria is both inspiring and humbling. War Paws work without borders and do not believe any dog should be turned away because of where it was born. To learn more about their incredibly important work helping dogs and how you can help them, go to their website – https://warpaws.org/
So far we have raised and donated £417.27 to this really amazing charity.
We are currently writing a series of booklets called the ‘spooky collection’. These booklets will be on paranormal happenings, cryptid and alien sightings, folklore, legend & the supernatural, and everything else in-between. They will be about real places, locations, and occurrences that have happened to individuals, focusing mainly (but not exclusively) on the areas of North Cornwall, North Devon, Dartmoor and Bodmin. Please do get in touch with us if you have a fabulous story to tell and live in one of these locations, or if you feel your house is haunted and would like to share your story, or if you think you have experienced something you simply cannot explain – we would really love to hear from you!
We are currently writing about: –
- Haunted Happenings at The Castle, Bude
- Eerie Locations in Devon & Cornwall
- Spooky Properties of Devon & Cornwall
- Cornwall & Devon Cryptids and Creatures of Folklore & Legend
- Mysterious Woods of Devon and Cornwall
We are also writing a series of ‘dog friendly’ booklets entitled – Spooky Trails with your Dog. These booklets will be all about fabulous dog walks you can undertake and enjoy with your best friend, taking in haunted places and locations as well as possible cryptid and folklore areas. They will also include dog friendly pubs and eateries to stop at during the walk that could have a resident ghost or two! These dog friendly walks will initially be based in North Devon and North Cornwall, but we hope to cover more areas in the future. If there is a ‘Spooky Trail’ you have done with your dog that you would like us to write about then please get in touch as we would love to cover more areas.

Supernatural Beings to Spooky Places
Every culture all over the world talks about supernatural beings in stories that they pass down from generation to generation. From the Skin-walker of the Navajo culture to the Onyro (vengeful spirit) of Japanese culture. Hollywood has made certain supernatural beings incredibly famous including Vampires, Faeries, Werewolves and Ghosts. From graveyards to haunted houses, ancient sites, where Ley lines pass, to really old buildings where people live alongside restless spirits – all are spooky places.

Devon and Cornwall has many spooky places that are both amazing and unique – from Wiseman’s Wood and Merrivale on Dartmoor to the Jamaica Inn on Bodmin and Chambercombe Manor near Ilfracombe. We also have many examples of supernatural beings, with Spriggans, Pixies and Hell Hounds being just a handful. The South West is an ancient place of wonder.

CRYPTOZOOLOGY
Cryptozoology is the study of unknown, legendary or extinct animals whose present existence is disputed or unsubstantiated. From the Loch Ness Monster to the Yeti, from the Mothman to the Chupacabra – most people have heard of a Cryptid without realising exactly what it is! There are some animals living amongst us today that were former Cryptids, including the Okapi, the Platypus, the Komodo Dragon, and the Coelacanth. Here in Devon and Cornwall we have famous examples of Cryptids, with the most well known being the Beast of Exmoor, the Beast of Bodmin and the Cornish Owlman.

Cryptids will continue to fascinate us, as we are always interested in things we cannot prove or understand.

Ancient Civilizations to Abandoned Places
Over the millennia there have been many incredible ancient civilizations, some very well known such as The Egyptians, some with very little known about them such as The Olmecs. They all built outstanding structures and statues, which have stood the test of time and are still as awe-inspiring today as they were when they were first built. All over the world there are abandoned places where once humans lived and died – from an abandoned building to an abandoned city, each has its story to tell of the people and their lives at that time.

There are amazing stone circles and other megalith monuments found in Devon and Cornwall. We also have inspiring abandoned castles such as at Tintagel and Oakhampton and spooky abandoned houses such as Blackborough House in Cullompton and Seafield House (‘The Haunted House’) in Westward Ho! Even the crumbling decay of time cannot stop our interest in these ancient places and their history and what they tell us about the civilizations that came before us.

RITUALS to RUNES
A ritual is a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, actions or objects, with Pagan practice involving rituals that utilize magic. Paganism is an ancient type of religion as well as being an umbrella term for several different traditions, with wicca being an excellent example of a modern Pagan religion. A huge characteristic of most Pagan religions is their worship and closeness to nature and their love of animals, with common practice involving rituals that are performed to mark the seasons. The most marked rituals are those associated with the new and full moons as well as the 8 sabbats, for example Yule.

Runes are a form of divination, or oracle reading system, that are used to help gain insight into situations or questions. Most Runes are made of stone and each stone features a symbol from the runic alphabet on them. They date back to ancient times and were used by Germanic and Nordic tribes. They have also been used to empower amulets, weapons and jewellery.

EXTRATERRESTRIALS
Are we alone in the universe? Have aliens already visited earth? Are aliens living and walking amongst us? Are alien abductions real or just a trick of the mind? These are just a few of the many questions asked about Extraterrestrials also known as E. T’s. There have been many UFO sightings in Devon and Cornwall, so don’t forget to take time out and look up at the night sky once in a while – you may be amazed at what you see!

Yin and Yang
Yin and Yang are the two complementary forces that make up all aspects and phenomena of life, where opposite forces are seen as interconnected and counterbalancing – there is light and dark, day and night, sun and moon, good and evil, male and female, yin and yang. It comes from the Chinese Culture and has developed over thousands of years. Yin is the symbol of earth, femaleness, darkness, passivity, and absorption, whereas Yang is the symbol of heaven, maleness, light, activity, and penetration.

In harmony, the two are depicted as the light and dark halves of a circle. We all strive to bring a little balance in to our daily lives.
